The challenge

An immersive activation for Afterpay Day 2025

Afterpay Day is more than a sales event. Shoppers anticipate it, influencers promote it, and it drives one of the biggest digital shopping surges of the year.

For 2025, Afterpay wanted more than clicks and conversions. They wanted buzz, interaction, media attention and content worth sharing. Most of all, they wanted a retail moment people would not forget.

Working alongside Thrive PR and XO Media, the brief was to plant that moment in the middle of Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, in front of thousands of passing shoppers, and make joining in irresistible.

The immersive idea

The Afterpay universe, built on Pitt Street

This was not a pop-up. We built a purpose-designed immersive environment that invited shoppers to step inside the Afterpay brand world.

Using motion tracking and spatial computing, visitors interacted with digital elements to unlock prizes and exclusive deals, blending physical play with digital delight and giving every participant the chance to win big.

The design was sleek. The interaction was intuitive. The excitement was instant, and every moment of it was built to be filmed, posted and tagged.

Why XR?

Shoppers want more than a discount

The retail landscape has moved on from discounts alone. Shoppers want interaction, innovation and experiences they can talk about afterwards.

Static ads, digital banners and traditional pop-ups are things people look at. An immersive activation is something they do, and that shift from audience to participant is what turns a promotion into a memory.

It also changes what a campaign produces. Every participant becomes a content creator, capturing and sharing the brand experience live from the event.

Inside the experience

Play, prizes and posts

Visitors moved through interactions designed to be understood in seconds, tuned for a busy public space with constant foot traffic.

Dynamic prize mechanics and QR integrations connected the physical activation to digital rewards, while shareable animations gave participants something worth posting.

Under the hood, the system was built in Unity and WebXR and optimised for real-world deployment: engaging crowds quickly while staying smooth, stable and visually striking through high visitor turnover.

The impact

A moment, a story, a memory

Hundreds of shoppers immersed themselves in the experience and thousands of prizes were redeemed through the in-experience win mechanics.

Shoppers were not just playing. They were recording, posting and tagging Afterpay, lighting up feeds, timelines and group chats, while the Today Show stopped by to film a featured segment on how immersive technology is reshaping retail.

The activation carried Afterpay’s reach far beyond Pitt Street Mall, and proved the bigger point: immersive activations are no longer fringe. Afterpay Day 2025 gave shoppers more than a deal. It gave them a moment worth talking about.
