The challenge
Making an unseen profession visible
Pathology plays a critical role in diagnosing disease, guiding treatment and protecting public health, yet much of that work happens behind the scenes.
For students considering a career in healthcare, that can make it difficult to understand the breadth of the profession or the impact different pathology disciplines can have.
The challenge was to make those pathways visible — not by recreating a day in the lab, but by showing how pathology connects individual patients, scientific discovery and wider health outcomes.
The immersive idea
Turning career pathways into human stories
Rather than presenting pathology as a series of disciplines or job descriptions, the experience explores it through real-world health stories.
Users can follow pathways including malaria, leukaemia, melanoma and Type 2 diabetes, discovering how pathology contributes at different stages of diagnosis, treatment, research and prevention.
Each story connects the science back to the person at its centre, helping students understand not only what pathologists do, but why the work matters.
Why XR?
Stepping inside the science
Many of the processes pathologists work with happen at a scale that cannot normally be seen.
Virtual reality allows us to transform blood cells, tissue, parasites and other microscopic structures into large-scale 3D environments that users can move through and explore.
Combined with spatial storytelling and voice-over, complex scientific ideas become more tangible — helping learners build a clearer picture of both the science and the career pathways behind it.
Inside the experience
Following the pathway from patient to impact
Each pathway begins with a human story before expanding into the pathology behind it.
In the malaria experience, for example, users follow a patient returning from Papua New Guinea before moving inside a blood sample to identify Plasmodium falciparum and understand the role pathology plays in diagnosis, treatment and disease surveillance.
Across the experience, users move between the personal and the microscopic, revealing how individual pathology decisions can connect to much wider health outcomes.
The visual language
Connecting science, people and possibility
The experience is built around an abstract network of glowing pathways, representing the connections between different areas of pathology and the people they affect.
Selecting a pathway sends light through the network before opening a new story, creating a visual metaphor for how knowledge and decisions can ripple outward.
This shared visual language connects otherwise very different disciplines into one experience, reinforcing pathology as an interconnected profession with many possible directions.
