The challenge
Making an overlooked career feel tangible
Australia's helicopter industry faces a growing skills shortage, yet aviation maintenance is a career path many young people may never encounter.
Working with the Australian Helicopter Industry Association, the challenge was to make this highly technical profession feel accessible, engaging and relevant to a younger audience.
The experience also needed to be portable enough to travel between schools, expos and large-scale events, while remaining intuitive for first-time VR users.
The immersive idea
Putting future engineers inside the hangar
We created the first level of a VR Maintenance Academy centred around the Robinson R44 helicopter.
Inside a detailed virtual hangar, participants complete real-world inspired maintenance tasks using the tools and components an aviation engineer would encounter in their work.
Rather than simply explaining what the job involves, the experience gives users a chance to try it for themselves — transforming career education into something active and memorable.
Why XR?
Learning through your own hands
Helicopter maintenance is physical by nature, making it difficult to communicate through brochures, videos or career talks alone.
Using Meta Quest 3 hand tracking, participants interact directly with virtual tools and helicopter components without controllers.
This makes the experience immediately intuitive while helping technical procedures feel more tangible — giving users a stronger sense of what working in aviation maintenance can actually involve.
Inside the experience
From maintenance task to take-off
Participants move between the hangar and cockpit as they complete a sequence of guided maintenance activities.
Voice-over instruction keeps the experience clear without relying on dense text or complex interfaces, while realistic tools and environments build familiarity with the work itself.
Successfully completing the tasks unlocks the reward: a cinematic helicopter flight over either Sydney Harbour or the Great Barrier Reef, connecting the maintenance work on the ground with the reason it matters in the air.
The impact
Inspiring a new generation of aviation engineers
More than 1,000 people trialled the experience at the 2025 Australian International Airshow, introducing many participants to a career they may never previously have considered.
The module now operates as a travelling outreach tool for schools and expos, giving AHIA a scalable way to introduce aviation engineering to new audiences.
Rather than simply telling young people that these careers exist, the VR Maintenance Academy gives them the opportunity to step into the role and experience it firsthand.
